Headache Medication Information You Need To Know

Cindy Heller asked:

————-Article————————————————————–

Headache medication is one of the top headache treatments that almost everyone has used at one time or another to find pain relief. About 90 percent of men and 95 percent of women will suffer from a headache during one year and that can add up to a lot of headache medication being sold. Headache medication is popular because it works fast, within the first 15 to 30 minutes, and can provide instant relief for headaches that can interrupt your day.

The Most Popular Headache Medication

Over the counter and nonprescription drugs is the most popular headache medication, as you do not need to visit a doctor to purchase them. However, you need to be aware of the side effects associate with medication and what medication it can and cannot be taken with.

All of the important information can be found on the label and you need to make sure you are not allergic or have any other type of reaction from taking the medication. Many times individuals will experience an upset stomach.

It is important that you follow the dosage instructions as the body can only handle so much of the medication before it becomes damaged. Certain pain relief medication can damage your kidneys and liver if taken too much. If you have any questions you should speak with the pharmacist or your doctor.

Different Headaches

There are two main categories that headaches can be broken into, primary and secondary headaches, though there are many other types of headaches that fall in these two categories.

The more severe headaches including tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines are all primary headaches. Other headaches that occur because of an illness or reaction to a medication are known as a secondary headache as they are not the main reason for the illness but instead are a symptom.

Headache Causes

Sleeping disorders, insomnia, stress, medication, color, odors, weather changes, emotional distress, foods, allergies, and panic attacks can all cause headaches. There are many other triggers but since no two people have the same headache cause it is very difficult to determine the correct treatment. You need to uncover what causes your headaches and then try a few treatments until you find the most effective one.

There are some extremely painful headaches that cannot be treated with over the counter medication, as this medication is not strong enough. A treatment used for migraines and some tension headaches include an injection or using prescription medication which many times is just a stronger version of the over the counter medication. If you are taking headache medication then it is important that you do not abuse the medication and instead try to determine and avoid what triggers your headaches.

Know the Symptoms of Cold and Cough

Corwin Brown asked:

Colds with or without cough usually are caused by a virus. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Colds cannot be cured, but cold symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medications.

Colds are most contagious during the first 2 to 4 days after symptoms appear, and may be contagious for up to 3 weeks. Your can catch a cold from person-to-person contact or by breathing in virus particles that are spread through the air by sneezing or coughing. Touching the mouth or nose after touching skin or another surface contaminated with a rhinovirus can also spread a cold.

Acetaminophen is less likely to upset your stomach than other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen which are used to relieve aches and pains. However, studies have shown that acetaminophen, aspirin or any other NSAID may worsen asthma and/or peptic ulcers. Aspirin should not be used in children under eighteen years old because it may play a role in causing Reye Syndrome, a rare but severe liver and central nervous system condition. Be sure to discuss all medication choices with your doctor.

A person who is going to cough first draws a deep breath in. This action causes his glottis to close and his muscles to contract, thus building up pressure in the chest. Then suddenly, the glottis opens, an explosive discharge of air sweeps through the air passages and carries with it the excess secretions or, in some cases, foreign matter, which has irritated the larynx, trachea, or bronchi.

Improper use of this medication (abuse) may result in serious harm (e.g., brain damage, seizure, death). Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than recommended by your doctor or the package instructions without your doctor’s approval.

Flu symptoms are quite similar to cold symptoms; it’s often hard to tell the difference. But there is one clue about flu that can help you know. When you have the flu, you feel flu symptoms sooner than you would cold symptoms, and they come on with much greater intensity. You may feel very weak and fatigued for up to 2 or 3 weeks. You’ll have muscle aches and periods of chills and sweats as fever comes and goes. You may also have a stuffy or runny nose, headache, and sore throat.

Cold or say common cold happens for three to four days and goes back with time. But allergic cold comes more often say every three to four weeks with same time period and symptoms and stay for longer. Better will be ask your health care provider about whether you are suffering from just common cold or allergic cold and cure for the same.

In fact many medical specialists now say that children in particular shouldn’t be given cough medicines, especially with cough suppressants, because they can have potentially dangerous side effects such as drowsiness, balance problems and chest infections in asthmatics. Other ingredients such as antihistamines can cause coughs and decongestants such as pseudoephedrine might cause irritability, sleeplessness and problems with muscle tone.

If your symptoms are bearable, you’re probably better off saving your money and treating your cold or flu the old-fashioned way — by drinking plenty of fluids, resting if possible, and seeing your doctor if your symptoms don’t go away after a few days, or if they get worse.

ADHD vs ADD – Unraveling The Mystery

Rob D. Hawkins asked:

In this article titled “ADHD vs ADD” we will first explore the many names which this condition has been called over the years and then work to explain the differences between ADHD vs ADD.

Sometimes it is pretty amazing how the evolution of research deals with theories once thought to be absolute which are ultimately proven to absolutely wrong or incomplete. Never has there been a better example than with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Let’s briefly cover the five name changes which have occurred in recent years.

Hyperactivity of Childhood: First noted in the first edition of the APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood: Noted in the second edition of the DSM.

Attention Deficit Disorder With or Without Hyperactivity (ADD): This name was introduced in the third edition of the DSM and is still used outside the doctor and specialist community.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): The third edition of the DSM was revised change ADD to ADHD.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD): The fourth edition of the DSM added the backslash.

What we see is as research catches up with speculation the name evolves. This trend will likely continue with biological conclusions and brain scan technology advancing at such a rapid rate. As we speculate into the future some experts believe that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will be broken down into a number of different disorders or at the very least subtypes.

Now let’s move back to our topic of ADHD vs ADD. We have determined that these are in fact the same condition but most people still associate one as having hyperactivity and one not having hyperactivity. In other words a person with ADHD likely has inattention/distractibility and impulsivity but not hyperactivity.

Some of the misunderstanding revolved around a number of different factors including adults with ADHD who failed to show signs of hyperactivity and women who were denied a diagnosis because they didn’t fit into the mold for being hyperactive.

What we now know is that hyperactive behavior in adults doesn’t go away it simply morphs into a more socially acceptable form. For instance a hyperactive child may become an adult that fidgets constantly but has learned to stay seated for an undetermined period of time.

In women the story is a little bit different. For years young girls, adolescents, and adult women were only thought to have ADHD in very rare instances. Now we know this is not true. While a ten to one ratio of boys to girls was once considered the norm now it is down to about three to one and dropping annually. One reason for this is hyperactive behavior in females is channeled into excessive and some would say endless talking.

While the story of ADHD vs ADD is fascinating, one should not lose sight of the fact that while hyperactive behavior is only present 50 percent of the time it can be one of the most obvious and detrimental symptoms.

What Next? We have discussed ADHD vs ADD but for those struggling with this condition finding a treatment option that can help them manage their symptoms should be one of their main priorities. The most common form of treatment for ADHD are stimulant medications such as Ritalin or Cylert. While effective all stimulant medications come with a number of serious label warnings. The risk of side effects or perhaps lack of success with stimulants has prompted many to investigate other options. A couple examples of this are behavior modification therapy and/or homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic remedies for ADHD are a side effect free way to address such problematic symptoms as inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, erratic behavior and hyperactivity and can be used both as a standalone treatment or as a compliment to other nonprescription alternatives.

Anthony Delar asked:

Obesity is found to increase mortality rate and has many unhealthy effects on body like making breathing difficult, increasing chances of diabetes and cholesterol, increasing the risk of cancer and many more. Obesity is not classed by being a few pounds overweight, but only if a person has BMI of over 27 or 30, then can he or she be termed as overweight or obese. For instance if you are 5ft 4inches and weigh 90kgs, you are obese and need to do something about it fast.

The first step to be taken is resorting to calorie-controlled diet and exercise regime. If they don’t work, then take the advice from a health expert or a doctor. Nowadays, many obese and overweight people go to doctors to ask for a prescription for Reductil weight loss medication. Find out more about this drug below:

How Reductil sibutramine work?

Reductil is an appetite suppressant. The active ingredient sibutramine in Reductil works by affecting neurotransmitters (natural body chemicals that are stored in nerve cells) in the brain. Reductil affects two neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and serotonin, from being absorbed back into the nerve cells, which are responsible for moderating mood and various other processes in the brain. With these chemicals free to act in the brain, it makes you feel less hungry and more fulfilled. Thus, you do not over eat and do not go for snacks in between meals. If your food habits are responsible for your weight gain, Reductil is a great option for you.

Reductil Precautions

There are many precautions to be taken for Reductil, as it is not safe for people with certain conditions.

People who should be cautious while on Reductil are people with mild to moderately decreased kidney function or liver function, high blood pressure, epilepsy, open angle glaucoma, family history of glaucoma, involuntary, recurrent muscle twitches or vocalisations (motor or verbal tics) and depression, increased risk of bleeding and syndrome involving short spells when breathing stops during sleep.

Reductil should not be used in people over 65 years of age or under 18 years of age. If a person’s obesity is caused by a medical condition or has severely decreased kidney function or liver function, uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, drug, alcohol or medication abuse, coronary artery disease, heart failure, increased heart rate, irregular heart beats, stroke or blocked arteries in the extremities; he or she should steer clear of Reductil.

ADD Versus ADHD? What is the Real Difference?

Laura Ramirez asked:

ADD versus ADHD is a dilemma many individuals and their doctors face. The two conditions are inextricably linked, but their symptoms can vary and treatment can as well depending on the individual. The first step in successful treatment is understanding exactly what you’re dealing with and the subtle differences between the two conditions.

ADD is actually an umbrella term which encompasses several different particular conditions. The course of treatment can depend on which of the sub categories an individual’s symptoms fall under. The main determining factor in any discussion of ADHD vs ADD is the presence of hyperactivity.

All forms of ADD involve an inability to properly concentrate or focus. Difficulty participating in certain activities, losing things, becoming easily distracted and failing to pay attention when spoken to can all be symptoms of ADD. When discussing ADD versus ADHD, the difference can be subtle. A person can have all of the symptoms of ADD as well as some level of hyperactivity, making them disruptive in group settings. This is the primary indicator of ADHD.

While the type and severity of symptoms can vary, one important element in the discussion of ADHD vs ADD is the particular course of treatment. Because hyperactivity can be an issue not only for the individual with ADHD but those they come in regular contact with as well, often doctors and patients are eager to rely on a quick fix to get symptoms under control as easily as possible.

In most cases, this means using prescription medications such as Ritalin. These types of medications can adequately address surface symptoms, but they are not without their drawbacks. Not only can they dull reactions, they can also carry serious side effects. As a result, one of the biggest parts of any ADD versus ADHD discussion has been the efficacy of this type of treatment.

Fortunately, there are now other forms of treatment available which are geared toward not only easing symptoms but addressing their underlying cause as well. When considering ADHD vs ADD, the cause of each is the same, namely disruptions in proper brain function. In light of this fact, all natural products have been developed which can treat this problem directly. Using herbs such as Hyoscyamus and Arsen iod, these products can help to soothe and sharpen brain function and increase focus.

Of course, any form of treatment is only going to be effective if it is incorporated as part of an overall treatment plan. This should include eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise as well as engaging in behavioral therapy.

Understanding ADD versus ADHD can help to target which specific treatment can be most helpful, but in most cases it is recommended that individuals work with a trained therapist to help control their own behavior.

Whether you are dealing with ADD or ADHD, it can seem like a real struggle, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many treatment options available which can help to control symptoms and allow the affected individual to continue fully participating in their life. So don’t let a diagnosis worry you, talk to your doctor and together you can come up with a treatment plan that will work for you.

Is Tinnitus a Disease or a Symptom ?

Mark Goeder-tarant asked:

If you have Tinnitus then you are most probably familiar with some of the most common causes.

There is a whole list of them for you to choose from.

Only when you start to analyze the known facts and their probable consequences will the whole scope of Tinnitus start to unfold.

There can be a million reasons why you have Tinnitus. Lets take a brief look at some of the most common symptoms for tinnitus. How many of these symptoms can you apply to yourself? Add more if you have to.

Lack of concentration,

Headaches,

Fatigue,

Social retreat,

Depressive moods,

Lack of patience,

Nervousness,

Panic attacks,

Anxiety,

Apprehension,

Stress and tension,

Lack of self confidence,

Insomnia,

Exhaustion,

Devaluation,

Other than the hearing loss which is physical, all other symptoms listed here are of a subconscious nature. Lets get 3 important things into perspective here. I will repeat these 3 sentences until they are tattooed into your soul.

1. Tinnitus is not a disease, it is a symptom!

2. You are not sick and you are not mentally ill. You are being warned!

3. You will defeat tinnitus if you accept it as a part of you.

As soon as you are ready to accept that the tinnitus is a part of you, the sooner you can expect to make progress.

The power of the mind is extraordinary. Think about this carefully. If tinnitus succeeded in turning your life upside down then accept the fact that all it used to achieve misery was your own mind. Thats quite an achievement isnt it ?

Thats how powerful your mind is. If it has the capability to make your life a complete misery then surely it can be re-programmed to do the opposite.

Its entirely up to you. The solution lies within yourself and your ability to learn.

What do we know about the causes of tinnitus?.

Where does it have its roots?

Ever heard of social sickness? Me either. Its a phrase that I like though. Here in Germany its called “Volkskrankheit”(has nothing to do with cars).

I once tried to compile a list of all elements which I suspected may have contributed to MY own tinnitus. Obviously, I listed the negative aspects of my life over a 10 year period. Some of these things could have been avoided, most of them were linked to each other. Dont forget, this is only a list of things that I think should be mentioned.

Ive tried not to generalize and Ive tried my best to stay honest, even if it means confessing to some bad sins. To be perfectly honest its not as dramatic as it looks. It just looks outrageous when written down!

Marital Stress,

Heavy smoking,

Drug and medication abuse, (i.e. Valium, Marijuana, Cocaine)

Relationship crisis,

unhealthy eating habits,

Loud noises,

Lack of exercise,

High cholesterol,

High blood sugar rate,

Personal loss,

Caffeine addiction (coffee and cola)

Lack of sleep,

Financial Problems,

Overweight,

Business pressures,

Inclination to worry about everything.

So there we have it.

It looks terrible I know. The worst thing is that I am one of millions who used to live like this. If you cant identify with anything written on this list then you shouldnt have tinnitus. Any one of these elements on their own would be harmful enough for any person.

Combine them and youre left with a time bomb waiting to explode. So now we have two lists. The first one above describes the symptoms and the second one describes possible causes. If you look carefully at the causes it wont take much imagination to conjure up a “symptom list” like the one above. What else do you expect?.

I dare you take a pen and paper and write down your own “bad list”. Be absolutely honest and write down all the things that you arent proud of or maybe would rather forget. Write down all the things you would like to change if you had a magic wand. ( My bad list is there for everyone to see. You can hide yours!

By the way, you dont have to have tinnitus to create a list like mine. I would be willing to bet that EVERYONE can come up with a list similar to mine. I say only similar because I know that not everyone is overweight, or smokes or tried drugs.

Think carefully about what you are reading on your list. If you are very honest, you will find that you dont need a magic wand to shorten this list. The only person on this planet that can change this list to something to be proud of is YOU!. I consider myself to be lucky. Tinnitus gave me a chance to re-shuffle my life

Once more. Please dont forget:

1. Tinnitus is not a disease, it is a symptom.

2. You are not sick and you are not mentally ill. You are being warned!

3. You will defeat tinnitus if you accept it as a part of you.

After an “auditory crash ” two years ago which left me with a temporary loss of all hearing I had no other choice than to take action. Ive been looking for an English Term for the German word Hoersturz. In fact this term is made of 2 words. “Hoer” (to hear ) and Sturz ( to crash ). Sounds nice right ?

Anyway this “Auditory Crash” of hearing lasted almost 2 days at the most and thanks to my doctor, I was up and about a week later.

After reading many books and collecting all the information I could find, I decided to take action. I didnt know it then, but the decision to cut out everything that was harming me probably saved my life.

Did you already write down your own list ?. If not, lets imagine this is your list.

Where do you start?

There are some things you can change straight away and without hesitation. Other things will require great patience, lots of time and the will to change.

“Lets start at the very beginning, a very good place you start” ( Richard Rodgers 1902-1979 )
